Rein in big tech.

Boldly invest

in our schools.

Hi, I’m public service nerd Molly Chase. I have the experience, long-term vision, and tenacity to fight for all our students.

Your Candidate for Minneapolis School Board, District 5

Political websites tend to look and sound the same. I’m writing every word on this site in hopes it will convey my commitment and the value I place on transparency and communication.

Who I Am

Growing up, public schools offered me the safety and consistency I needed. A few amazing teachers made all the difference in the trajectory of my life. Now, I see the ways we exhaust and undervalue so many people we rely on. I know we can do better.

Fifteen years ago, I left behind the corporate world behind (Cartoon Network in Atlanta, GA) and moved to Minneapolis, where I embraced work with greater meaning. I’ve been working with nonprofits ever since. I met my husband here and we are raising our MPS first-grader in South Minneapolis.

I am a finance nerd who has served a governor-appointed school board role. I’m responsive and solutions-oriented.

A life-long Dem/DFLer, I love our public schools and am wary of the creeping influence of Big Tech in our classrooms. I have a positive vision for Minneapolis Public Schools’ future, and the tenacity to get us there.

Why I’m Running

Minneapolis Public Schools' challenges are complex, but not insurmountable.

In times of crisis–whether grieving the Annunciation tragedy or protecting our neighbors from ICE–we rally together. Now is the time to lean into our collective Minneapolis instinct for solidarity and address our schools’ needs on several fronts at the same time.

Minneapolis, I’m here to fight for students and for our public schools. I’m committed to:

✔️ Reining in big tech in our classrooms

✔️ Shoring up our financial vulnerabilities

✔️ Investing in our schools, students, education support professionals, and teachers

Why vote for me

Both candidates for District 5 have great values and care deeply about our schools. Here’s what sets me apart:

✔ Taking on technology and screen use in our classrooms.

✔ Extensive experience:

  • Budget management and oversight (25+ years)

  • School board experience (Perpich, 2020-2024)

  • Nonprofit mentorship and advocacy (15 years)

✔ Demonstrating work ethic through action

  • I’m running this campaign on my own, without influence or support from outside organizations. I’m already showing you what I’m promising. I work hard and I don’t mind an uphill battle.

Our challenges are complex

but not insurmountable.

Rein in big tech

A growing body of research questions 1:1 device use in schools — yet we continue to introduce iPads with headphones starting in Kindergarten. We can fix this.

EdTech in Classrooms

Special Education

Focus on Quality

Teaching vacancies, budget cuts, and disproportionality lead to unacceptable outcomes. We must treat our educators and families with care, and make real investments.

Enrollment Decline

Focus on Growth

Focus on retention and growth leads to better outcomes, now and in the future. Losses are costly in every way. When we gain a student, we gain a family. Family by family, we build our community schools.

Financial Crisis

Provide In-depth Oversight & Advocacy

From staffing to transportation to food, all costs are rising. All while state and federal dollars decline. Financial oversight and MN Legislative advocacy are two of the Board’s most important roles.

Transformation

Navigate Change

Board members elected this November will inherit Transformation, including potential school consolidation and closures. Responsible leadership will be essential in mitigating enrollment loss and potential negative effects on families and neighborhoods.

School Safety

Prevent violence

MPS can do more to prevent gun and other types of violence through education, more supports in middle and high school, and community building.

  • "I witnessed first-hand Molly’s dedication. From 2011 to 2018, she served in an unpaid, part-time leadership role for an artist-led startup theater, all while working full time. In seven years, she helped grow that organization's annual budget from $100,000 to over $660,000 — not by cutting corners, but by doing the slow, methodical work of community building, strategic planning, and earned trust. I share this because this is how I know Molly Chase has the right skill set for Minneapolis Public Schools. The skills that grew that theater —listening deeply to community, translating values into sustainable systems, persuading skeptical stakeholders, and showing up to do unglamorous work without a title or a salary — are precisely the skills a school board member needs."

Amy Stedman, Chair of DFL Senate District 47

  • "In my time of knowing and working with Molly, I've seen firsthand what true, community-based collaboration looks like: she brings a sharp and thoughtful ear, she leads with kindness, and she combines those with an incredible work ethic. We're very fortunate that she's turned her sights on improving our city in this way and will be an incredible asset to our school board.”

—Ian Fishman, District 5 voter and former colleague

  • “Molly is authentic. Her open and inclusive communication, her acute problem-solving skills, and positive nature make her someone you want to know. And more importantly want on your side!”

    -Maureen Tubbs, volunteer

  • “As long as I have known and also been aware of Molly which is for 16 years now, she has been known to me as a true community builder, a fundraising LEGEND, and an organizer for the ages. She is warm, kind, thoughtful, smart, willing to listen to others, and a strong advocate for those without voices. She is the person I look to if I’m looking for someone who is going to not only get something done, but to get it right with precision and intent.”

    -Lizzie Gardner, volunteer

  • “I've known Molly for 15 years, and I know her as someone with a very rare amount of integrity and wise humility, who is not afraid to criticize wrongs and make hard decisions. In a time where MPS has been in crisis for years, she is the kind of caring and tough person we need looking out for Minneapolis kids.”

—Will Roberts, public school teacher & District 5 voter

School board experience

I was honored to serve a governor-appointed board director term at Perpich Center for Arts Education (2020-2024), where I built experience with:

  • Multiple Trainings, including Statewide Minnesota School Board Orientation

  • Open Meeting and State Budget/Finance Rules

  • Financial Planning and Oversight Through Legislative Bonding Years and Budget Years

  • Directly Lobbying the MN Legislature across all parties and geographic locations, via one-on-one meetings and hearing testimony.

Accomplishments

✔ Expanded free lunch and breakfast, doubling student opt-in rate for meals from approx 40% to 80%.

✔ Chaired the Government Relations Committee.

✔ Successfully advocated with GOP and DFL legislators to save Perpich from closure.

✔ Attended and actively engaged in board meetings (40+) and committee meetings (30+), missing only 2 meetings in four years.

✔ Partnered with Administration in co-crafting meaningful annual board retreats that connected the board in shared vision and tactical next steps.

The icebreaker question you didn’t ask, answered

A snapshot from the 1970s of a young baby lying in bed with a blanket, a stuffed animal, and a patterned pillow behind them.

It’s okay that you’ve never heard of me! Here’s what I’d probably contribute to a forced icebreaker situation.

  • At age 52, I have the unusual distinction of being old enough to join the AARP but young enough to be the mom of a six-year-old.

  • My crush in middle school was Benjamin Franklin. (I wish I were kidding.) I majored in History at the University of Georgia.

  • Favorite first work experiences: Shelving books at my local public library, elementary school support via the AmeriCorps pilot program. I worked my way up to leading a 45-person digital team at Cartoon Network, ultimately leaving corporate life to focus on start-ups and nonprofits.

  • No surprise, I dislike the immense power and damage caused by billionaires. But I have a soft spot for Turner Broadcasting founder, media mogul, and bison enthusiast, Ted Turner.

  • One summer during high school, I lived in Tbilisi, Georgia! Less than a year later, Georgia declared its independence from the Soviet Union. (These facts are not related.)

  • I love movies and film production. I’ve worked as producer, assistant director, and on craft services.

  • I’ve co-hosted a podcast about movies, nostalgia, and the patriarchy since 2014. We enjoy moderate success and pizza.

  • Things I’m good at: building systems, doing research, listening deeply, joking around (when appropriate), and working extremely hard for the people and causes I’m passionate about.
